TDK was established as a corporation in 1935 to achieve the world's first commercialization of the magnetic material "ferrite." This was inspired by the wish to create something of value that is truly of use to society. Ferrite had been invented at the Tokyo Institute of Technology but its possibilities were as yet unknown. Driven by a belief in its potential, TDK was indeed "a venture business born out of academic research." Ever since then, the company has been evolving along with the rapid expansion of the electronics industry itself. In December 2015, we were able to celebrate our 80th anniversary.

Throughout the eight decades since the company's founding, and bolstered by our strong basis in magnetics technology derived from ferrite, TDK has been steadfastly pursuing the development of products that have true value. Keeping alive the venture spirit that defined our beginnings, we took up the challenge of exploring new technological fields while maintaining a strong dedication to craftsmanship as embodied in the Japanese Monozukuri concept. This enabled us to create an ongoing succession of innovative and valuable products. Nowadays, the TDK portfolio comprises ferrite cores, coils, transformers, ceramic capacitors, sensors, magnetic heads, magnets, power supplies, batteries and many other electronic components and devices.

The age of the truly smart society where people's lives and the realm of industry are sustained by extremely sophisticated networks is about to begin. In order to help realize such new social frameworks, TDK is focusing on ICT (Information and Communication Technology), the automotive sector, as well as industrial equipment and energy as our key business fields. At the same time, we are also creating new businesses in the area of wearables and healthcare, aimed at supporting a healthy and comfortable lifestyle. Strategic growth products here are sensors and actuators, energy units, and next-generation electronic components, which will be targets for further expansion.

Taking full advantage of our global network linking more than 30 countries around the globe, we will speed up the process of developing and marketing products of value. This will sustain the further growth of TDK as a creator and innovator, and it is also our way of contributing to the future of electronics and the progress of society at large.
