Revision to TDK Environmental Action 2010
Revision to TDK Environmental Action 2010
Having made environmental preservation one of its top management policies, TDK adopted TDK Environmental Action 2010 - a basic plan covering the years up to 2010 - in October 2002 as a next step in its environmental undertakings and has implemented activities in accordance with this plan since April 2003. In April 2005, TDK revised TDK Environmental Action 2010 for the second time and consolidated seven medium-term goals based on the characteristics of TDK's business. This revision was made because all measures for elevating environmental awareness were completed. For objectives under chemical emissions controls, TDK completely ceased using such environmentally harmful materials as cadmium and hexavalent chromium. TDK will continue its efforts in line with TDK Environmental Action 2010 by identifying the respective roles and responsibilities of production sites, business divisions, and staff.

The customers of electronic components, TDK's core products, range from electronic makers and electronic assembly manufacturers to components manufacturers. As a supplier, TDK has implemented a variety of CS initiatives, including environmental activities. TDK's CS efforts were recognized by Intel Corporation, a customer that presented TDK with its Preferred Quality Supplier (PQS) award in 2001 and 2002. In addition, TDK cleared even more stringent customer service quality hurdles and received Intel's Supplier Continuous Quality Improvement (SCQI) award in 2003, becoming the first Japanese passive electronic components manufacturer to receive the prestigious award. TDK won the award again in 2004 along with a number of other awards from its customers.

Conformity to the RoHS* Directive of General Purpose Electronic Components Completed
TDK has completed making its general purpose electronic components conform to the RoHS Directive. The company's efforts toward conformity are a part of its product environmental management framework. As a result, TDK has eliminated the use of six substances?lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDE)?in applications regulated by the RoHS Directive, and reduced the use of banned substances in applications exempted from the directive. In addition, TDK has stopped using polyvinyl chloride in the company's general purpose electronic components and packing materials and put in place a system for supplying environmentally assured products. TDK's product environmental management is based on its concept of product environment assurance at every product stage, from material procurement to development, manufacture, and sales.

*RoHS is the abbreviation for Restriction on Hazardous Substances, which refers to European Union regulations on six harmful substances. The six substances are lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyles (PBB), and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDE).
