Local Community Relations

Basic Concept of Contributing to Society

As a corporate citizen, TDK recognizes the importance of coexisting with the community and, thinking about what we can do for society as a company, promotes various original social contribution activities.

Principle

Based on TDK's corporate motto of "Contribute to culture and industry through creativity," the TDK Group aspires to foster the development of a healthy and prosperous society by implementing various activities in which all TDK employees can feel committed and connected to the community.

Policy

The TDK Group will utilize its various resources (employees, products, capital, information, etc.) to globally implement proactive community activities - both alone and working alongside NPOs and NGOs - that contribute to the betterment of society in the areas of (1) academic, research, and education, (2) sports, art, and culture, (3) environmental conservation, and (4) social welfare and local community service activities.

Academic, Research and Education Activities

TDK is willing to return the profits of its activities to local communities by utilizing our accumulated product technologies and human resources. Specifically, TDK wishes to offer opportunities for young people who will lead the next generation to acquire a wide range of knowledge, experiences, and skills.

Professional lecture (Chikumagawa Techno Factory, Nagano Prefecture)
Requested by Asama Junior High School of Saku City, a professional lecture was held for 21 eighth-grade students. The title of the lecture was "The Principles of Magneto-Optical Recording," given by Mr. Motohiro Inoue, a senior researcher at the SQ Research Center. Mr. Inoue used models to explain the principles in simple terms and the students listened with their full attention.
Parent-child handicraft workshop (Narita Plant, Chiba Prefecture)
In August 2011, upon request from the Narita Municipal Board of Education, TDK sent four instructors to host this workshop. It is a popular workshop that every year attracts many applicants. This year the amount of time for the actual handicraft work was increased to three hours by request, and 30 families participated. Magnets were again used this year, and the participants built items ranging from paper clip motors to model linear motor cars.
TDK joins Career Day (TDK Components USA, Inc.)
Three employees from TDK went to Eastside Elementary School of Coweta County, Georgia, to participate in the school's annual Career Day event. The three spoke to three classes of fifth graders about how the company processes wastewater. They stressed the importance of studying in school, and told the children how math and science are useful in their jobs. The children enjoyed learning while playing a game in which the child who got the closest correct answer was given a coupon for a free ice cream.

Sports, Art and Culture Activities

TDK strives to be an "exciting company, " capable of providing quality and excitement to stakeholders. TDK provides support in inspirational sports and art activities that uplift people's hearts.

Outreach mini concert (Akita General Affairs Dept./Head Office Corporate Communications Dept.)
In September 2011, 521 fourth and seventh grade students filling an auditorium in Nikaho, Akita Prefecture, were treated to a classical concert that three players perform as "Fureai Trio?Kyoko Yoshida and Friends?". The outreach mini concert series is a community-based educational program started in 2005. It provides an opportunity for children in the region where TDK has roots to experience a live performance by professional classical musicians.
Students invited to TDK Orchestra public rehearsal (Head Office Corporate Communications Dept.)
Prior to a TDK Orchestra Concert performance, a public rehearsal was held to which 200 music students were invited. Before the rehearsal, the composer Toshio Hosokawa gave the students a brief lecture. The students then watched as conductor Sir Simon Rattle gave verbal instructions to the orchestra members and guided them through a serious rehearsal to create the sound he was looking for. It was a backstage experience of making music that one never usually sees. "I was really struck by how true music is made," said one of the students.

Environmental Conservation Activities

TDK is engaged in R&D activities to provide products that make people's lives more convenient. But we also work earnestly on various environmental conservation activities to contribute to the symbiosis with the global environment.

Coastline environmental protection in Taoyuan County (TDK Taiwan Corp.)
In April 2011, the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Taoyuan County government in northwest Taiwan organized an event to clean up the coastline, joined by 70 employees from TDK. About 2,200 citizens with an interest in environmental protection gathered for the clean-up and other activities to protect the scenic marine environment.
Forest maintenance (TDK-Lambda Corp.)
In September 2012, tree planting was carried out in Shinano-machi, Nagano Prefecture, at the Lambda Forest as part of local community relations activities in the third year of training in the company. Wood chips from trees culled in 2011 as part of conservation efforts were used to create a walking path.
WWF Earth Hour 2012?Promoting corporate policy and employee education (TDK Hong Kong Co., Ltd.)
TDK Hong Kong supports Earth Hour, an annual worldwide event organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), encouraging participation by employees and the local community. The 2012 event was held on March 31 between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. (local time). During this one hour, people are encouraged to switch off electricity as a symbolic act to show support for climate change action. TDK Hong Kong has a policy of turning off lights and encouraging employees to set personal targets for saving energy. Examples include turning off all office lights at lunchtime and turning the power off for office equipment and computers?actions promoted through an EMS* procedural manual and by displaying posters. Also, the heating/cooling system is shut down on weekends and holidays if no special circumstances require it to be on, thereby contributing in a small way to preventing global warming.

Social Welfare and Local Community Service Activities

TDK conducts its business activities on a global basis. We endeavor to apply our resources in a positive manner and provide help in overcoming various challenges in local communities, in order to realize a better society.

Volunteer activities (TDK Yurihonjo Corp.)
Employees of TDK Yurihonjo volunteered at a social welfare facility in the Yashima district of Akita Prefecture in September 2011. Although there was light rain on the day, 15 employees split into three groups to wipe windows inside and out, clean wheelchairs, and fold gauze.
Fund-raising event for cleft lip/cleft palate surgery (PT EPCOS Indonesia)
On July 17, 2011, PT EPCOS Indonesia joined a fund-raising event that enables poor children from Riau Islands Province to receive cleft lip/cleft palate surgery. To date, at least 114 children have received surgery and are well on the way to recovery. This program is carried out through cooperation between the Indonesian government, Singapore Consulate, PSMTI (Indonesia Chinese Social Association), and Awal Bros Hospital.
Traditional Brazilian winter clothing donation campaign (EPCOS do Brasil Ltda.)
In July and October, employees of EPCOS do Brasil Ltda. joined people from the local community in hosting a winter clothing donation event, a traditional campaign that provides clothing, shoes, and other winter items to people in need in poor communities. In addition to the donations by local community, EPCOS collected clothing from approximately 300 employees, donating 1,590 articles of clothing in 2011.

Support for Disaster Areas

  • To provide disaster support in response to the flooding in Thailand that occurred in July 2011 and the months following, TDK collected approximately 5.37 million yen in Japan. It was split evenly into thirds and distributed to the Thai Red Cross Society and employees of TDK (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and Magnecomp Precision Technology Public Co., Ltd.
    A total of 11,178 articles of clothing (men's, women's and children's) were collected, then sorted at the Ichikawa Technical Center. In November they were sent to TDK (Thailand) Co., Ltd. Also, Magnecomp Precision Technology Public Co., Ltd. set up donation collection boxes from April 4 to 8. During this five-day period, 9,000 employees at two plants joined in support activities. The 60,000 Thai baht collected was used to aid disaster victims through the purchase of rice and drinking water.
  • In order to facilitate an early recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake in the disaster zones, and to make a social contribution in those areas, a volunteer initiative cosponsored by both labor and management at the TDK Head Office, Technical Center, and Narita Plant was carried out in Shichigahama-machi, Miyagi Prefecture. Four times?in August, October, and December 2011, and March 2012?with a total of 142 volunteers, clean-up activities were conducted along the coastline, including rubble removal from a forested area, the cleaning of inundated homes, and the removal of sand and mud from roadside gutters.
